The Lower Lea Valley, London
The Lower Lea Valley is a large regeneration area within London, just east of the centre and running from Stratford and the Olympics site in the north down to Canary Wharf and the Royal Docks next to the Thames.
This design workshop addresses several key issues relating to ideas about the productive city. One is the supporting of a knowledge-based economy and of creative industries; another is about density, intensity and mix – questioning ideas of workspace and residential space; and another is about the marginalisation of citizens from the resources of the city and from the new economy. These issues have impacts on living and working spaces, clusters and networks of resources, and the design of urban space. Themes explored by the groups include new models of productive city; the use of voids; typology; and scale related to both form and landscape.
